Brothers - I am posting a quick AAR from Dave "9D" Thompson about Vietnam Patrol
Man am I tired!! I might be pretty useless today, but it was worth it!!! For those that could not make it this weekend, you missed an awesome game where we, along with our Team Boxer brethren, again brought the monkey stomp to the field!! The TCO/Boxer Alliance won Most Valuable Team and even players on the other side kept coming up to the campsite saying how awesome it was to watch us work. One guy said “You guys are like ninjas!! One minute there’s none of you there, the next minute there are 20 of you swarming out of nowhere!!” Mind you we only had 9 TCO this weekend. J Also, I just want to say how awesome everyone played this weekend! Everyone had moments of glory which I may or may not capture below (please feel free to add war stories that I accidentally omit). And our non-regulars like Alex and ET also made a huge positive impact on our unit. And between Dwayne and Alex getting all the fake money and props, we had a well-oiled machine for the role playing…we were never close to being out of bribe money!! J Great job to everyone!!!
Day one started off with a strategic push through the western side of the field through the creek to set up our Forward Operating Base (FOB) below Firebase Alpha. This position allowed us to move laterally east, west and south to accomplish missions. The overall strategy that Greenman, XMAN and I developed was a zone strategy using core teams to occupy areas of operation (AO) each with one zone commander…similar to XMAN’s strategy at Fulda and my strategy at Gen Kill. Capital Offense/Boxer was the one unit on the field that was really moving through all zones as we were the mission running team. This game, unlike other CDWC games, was mission based as opposed to territory based…however, controlling territory was key to running missions, so our strategy did not change much.
Unfortunately for the other team, they did not pay attention to the lessons from Fulda and Gen Kill and adapt a similar strategy. At the break of the game, they made a huge push to Rex from SIM, which is where the majority of their forces seemed to end up. This was unwise for several reasons…first, it was useless because there was a standing order that neither CP could be taken; second, it allowed our team to move in and control the entire western side of the field and on up to Hamburger. This gave us free reign for missions. Command communications were awesome as always…because the core unit commanders were all teams we know and have played with, it was a very fluid operation from top to bottom…a mission would come in, Green would radio it to me, I would radio to the AO commander in the AO that we were to be operating in, and they would go to work clearing a forward perimeter for us to accomplish the missions.
This worked a little too well…because I don’t think a single Capital Offense player had gone through a hopper and a guppy until about 1400 on Saturday, and the game started at 1100. We literally had NOTHING to shoot at…instead, we were simply moving supply lines (AKA – heavy F-ing crates) from one side of the field to the other. For a while we were having to negotiate with Ray up at Apache disguised as Frenchman…we had to give him beef jerkey and money to get a stupid 100lb printing press out of Apache and ALL the way back to Luke across the field. Will the Thrill, who had arrived at 0600 and was operating on no sleep, looked dazed and confused after the 6th haul up to Apache from. I went up and asked if everything was ok, and he simply responded “I’m a little…….frustrated.” LOL! Then Smoochy echoed Will’s complaint that he wanted to kill things…so I began my quest to find us a role to go shoot people and let others carry heavy boxes that Ferg gave to us so he could sit in the CP and laugh.
Bishop, who doubled as a CIA agent in the game, tried to lure us into an ambush at Apache, but I barrel tagged Bishop and we took out the ambush team with a swarm of gunfire. Bishop, for someone who prides himself on barrel tags, you gotta be quicker on the draw dude…given your disdain for shortness, it must hurt your ego to be taken out by someone of my height…
I can’t remember whether it was day one or two when the tank first entered the field, but Woodboss had his usual I’m gonna make the tankers’ lives miserable wet dream and took it out over and over again. We also had a great time lighting people up at Hamburger and Apache towards the end of the day too.
Opportunity 1 – The Hmongs – This game was dedicated to Hmong fighters, and Ferg found about 20-30 Hmong (IN HICKORY?!?!?!) to role play in the game. We got word that Ferg wanted Duckett cleared out from both teams so he could “set up a mission.” I could smell trouble already…then he moved all the Hmong into Duckett to “negotiate.” Over the command radio, we debated what to do with the Hmong. XMAN was, as he put it, thinking like a Marine and wanted to do the ethical thing of not killing all of the Hmong. I was thinking like a bad guy, and after reading about Operation Red Wing in Afghanistan (and knowing Ferg’s twisted mind), I said we should execute all of them now while we have the chance. Green sided with X and let them live. Then they turned on us and started causing all kinds of trouble…they annihilated our forces in Duckett and were holding firm in the base along with some American forces. So Capital Offense swept down from the top side of Holiday to engage. I said “Let’s get our whistles out and intimidate.” And then we moved in…I filtered down through the woods where I knew we had friendlies controlling. But then a friendly popped up and saw me and dropped back down and began blind firing all over me…hit me three times and I dropped to the ground with my legs spread nice and wide for the money shot…he finished me off with a direct hit to righty. My whistle made a pppft sound as I dropped it out of my mouth and began squealing like a pig. Ironman from Rogue Cell was there and saw that I was really hurt and came running over and hurled himself (he’s a big guy too) on top of me to protect me from getting hit any further. As he had me in prison rape stance, he was screaming for a cease fire and then noticed my nametag and said “Oh hey Dave!!” I told him I was alright and just needed a minute…then Greenman called for an urgent message…I told him I took one to the nads and needed a minute to breath…when Green radioed back I could hear the whole CP laughing…a few minutes later, Vara and Smoochy found me in the fetal position on a trail motionless…they were trying not to laugh but it didn’t work too well. To add insult to injury, by the time I could breath and walk again, we had taken out everyone at Duckett and cleared the area. Aside from Lisa wanting to play Nurse/Patient with my swollen sack, there was no residual benefit to that push.
Opportunity 2 – Alpha – Towards the end of Day 1, the American team had taken Alpha from us, and TCO decided we’d have some fun taking it back. We came up the low side from the creek and moved into the woods on the right flank of Alpha. Mike and I moved to the top side and broke silence by thwaping two targets in their big melons sticking out…then everyone bum rushed in. Smoochy and Will were so excited to be shooting at things that I thought they might fix bayonets when they hit the trenches. Lisa and Smoochy and I think Will went low side and funneled from the right. Alex and I think Vara came up from the left side walking and gunning, and Mike and I came through the back of the trenches. The entire assault took less than 2 minutes and we had re-taken Alpha. Now we decided to go hit Rex. We came up from Alpha and ran into the open field blazing on an unsuspecting group of players…there were at least 30 in Rex with another 20 or so around the perimeter, but when we were done there were only about 8-10 guys in the base. We didn’t get in because we all got taken out with reinforcements, but man it was a fun push!! At one point, I was moving to the outer trenches and a guy popped up in front of me…before I could take a shot a barrage of paint came flying over my shoulder to take the guy out…I followed the trail of the 200 rounds back to its source to see where “Will the Thrill/Will the I Love to Overshoot the Crap Out of You” was standing!! :0
Night game – not one of our best showings, but we still got the job done and had a great time. We had a lot of comms issues and a TON of fratricide, but in the end we did what needed to be done. At the beginning of the night, Smoochy came with Lisa and me on the right hand side of SIM while Will and Vara went to the left. Smoochy stopped for a second while we were all huddled up to clear off his lenses…he looked down and then when he looked back up Lisa and I were gone…since he has never been to the field before, he had no idea where he was and no idea where he was going…he curled up behind an oak tree and cried for a bit, then somehow found his way into Sim and into one of the trailers…which trailer exactly is still a matter of debate...We had excellent command and control over all with Alex providing precise, crisp and short transmissions of friendly/OpFor status. The night game ended on another high note though when Lisa arranged a 4 corner assault on Rex and retook the base…in truth, we only shot a few people, the rest surrendered in utter terror from the Team with Green Eyes!!!! Muwhahahahaha!!!
Day 2 we saw a lot more action and had a blast taking Sim, Alpha, and Rex, then retaking Sim, Alpha, and Rex, oh, and then taking Sim, Alpha, and Rex! The American General and I had a few words after I shot him 3 times point blank in the crack of his ass when I came around him on a run and gun when he was trying to sneak up on me. We had a couple great pushes from SIM to REX – when we came up on the Americans’ backs, one of them started yelling “I told the General you’d be coming this way and to watch out!!” We had a huge push on SIM to take back that 100lb printing press and Woodboss must have shot 20 rockets into SIM taking every single bunker out!! LOL!! Eventually we got down into SIM with the entire Blue team in there in fortified positions, but the combination of TCO, Boxer, Lethal Paintball, and Rogue Cell proved to be too much for them and we weeded them out. ET had an awesome charge in SIM while protecting me because I had to gun so I could help carry the printing press…he flanked around on a guy about to take me out like a true pro! And Carl had a great run with me taking that big d**n thing out of SIM under enormously heavy cover fire. After that push was over, there was some give and take, but we basically held the entire field for the rest of the day. The Blue team was scattered to the wind with no discernable leadership or organization. TCO helped relieve pressure off Blue advances by continuously taking SIM, forcing them to call for attacking forces to come back and defend their homeland…the plan worked masterfully. The game ended with pretty much all of us sitting in SIM City for the last fruitless effort by Blue to retake their base…but they never even got close.
It was a great game and a great time! Alex, sorry you had to leave us before Sunday, but thanks so much for charging hard with us all day and night Saturday!!! Love running with you! Dwayne, thanks as always for helping in so many areas and for taking pics of the Team – look forward to seeing them! Woodboss, thanks as always for bringing so many supplies for the Team and for single handedly ensuring we remained hydrated!! I realized after we left that we owed you some cash for all the drinks you supplied, and Dwayne, hopefully you got all the $$ you needed for the beer!! Let’s make sure we all square up next event. Vara, thanks for hauling all the Team stuff as always. Bishop, thanks for making sure that I know I am under regulation height (and don’t worry about me barrel tagging you…sooner or later, with practice, you too can be as good as me). And Mike, Carl, Will, and Smoochy – thanks for making the long roadtrip and for contributing 100% the whole game!! I know I’ve missed a lot of good individual stories, but you guys, along with everyone else really kicked a lot of a$$ this weekend!!!! J
And Kent and fellow Boxer Brethren, holy crap, do we make an unbeatable combination!!! We talked after the game so most has been said already, but it is truly unbelievable how the combination of our two teams complements each other so well and how much fun we all have playing together!! Really fun stuff!!!!!!! And Kent – I think we should replace Kendal’s handle from “Dirt Boy” to “Gollum” or “Live Ordinance!” Two hilarious stories with him this weekend – one involving rocks in a creek and the other involving a nerf rocket that thwacked him right in the noggin!! LOL
It is always great for me to go to this field because of the sportsmanship and camaraderie among all the teams in attendance. And Capital Offense is treated like superstars by players and refs there, which is not a bad thing either! Really a fun time, and I had a great time hanging out with everyone before during and after the game as always. It’s great that we can all yell at each other and get in each other’s faces during the game and then be COMPLETELY at ease and friends as soon as we are off the field – that is really one of the big strengths of the team I think is that we all understand how to be highly competitive, but never so much that it affects the friendships we have all developed with each other and with other teams. It really is an outstanding group of people that I am proud to be with. Looking forward to June!!! J
